Porto is Portugal's second largest city, after Lisbon, and is one of the major urban areas in the South of Europe and second capital of large urban area in Portugal.

Administrative borders (area 41.66 km ²/16 square miles) and a population of 237584 (2011) inhabitants, distributed among 15 civil parishes.

Porto metropolitan area, which extends beyond the administrative borders of the city, with a population of 1.3 million (2011) in the area of 389 km2 (150 sq mi), making it the second largest metropolitan area in Portugal.

The Porto metropolitan area includes approximately 2 million people.

Porto is recognized as a global city for the gamma level by the globalization and world cities (GaWC) study group and being one of the five cities in the Iberian Peninsula with a world city (the others are Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, and Valencia).

Located along the mouth of the Douro River in Northern Portugal, Porto is characterized as one of the oldest European centres, and registered as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1996.

The settlement dates back to many centuries, when it was the site of the Roman Empire.

Latin name indicated, Portus Cale, as the origin of the name "Portugal", based on a literal and oral development of Latin.

In Portuguese is spelled city name with the definite article "o Porto" (English: the port).

As a result, the English name evolved from a misinterpretation of the speech and referred to as "Porto" in modern literature and many of the speakers.
